After being approved by the Chamber of Deputies last year, the Bill 5060/13 was finally published in the Official Diary of the Union last month, 21st of June, establishing the 27th of September as the National Huntington’s Disease Awareness Day.
The creation of this day was officialized by the President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, through the sanction of Law 14.607/23. The text was signed by the vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin.
This day is a testimony of the power of union and collective effort. Thanks to the tireless dedication of patients, families and some healthcare professionals, we now have an official date to highlight the importance of raising awareness about Huntington’s Disease.
This achievment carries with it an essential purpose. The National Huntington’s Disease Awareness Day will let us educate society about the complex nature of this condition, demystify misconceptions and reduce the stigma associeted to it. Besides, this day will be a reminder of support to all people affected, their families and caregivers, giving them a space of understanding and empathy.
It is also a moment to recognize and value the advances made in the medical reserach. Through this day, we can increase the awareness about the necessity of investing in scientific studies, looking for more effective treatments and, who knows, a cure for Huntington’s Disease. Together, we are boosting the hope and a promise of a better future for everyone affected by this disease.
